Beaker & Flask 720 S.E. Sandy Blvd

Being approached by mixologist Kevin Ludwig to design a bar with the name "Beaker & Flask" and the space being the former home of Krueger's Office Supply located in Portland's "Distillery Row" the atmosphere called for some play on Chemistry Laboratory meets Industrial Supplies. The space is dominated by a curving glass tile faced and concrete topped bar that sets a commanding stage for the business of mixing cocktails. Ben Bettinger is in a tandem command position at the open kitchen looking out over bar and seating areas to the semi circular booths at the front radius glass and the city view beyond. During construction as many of the existing raw materials were cleaned up and maintained for the finish space. Concrete walls and floor were maintained as well as the fir ceiling joists and nailer-strips by packing new insulation high up out of sight. The back bar and kitchen walls are covered with shelves and chalkboard paint to be inscribed with favorite drink recipes, menus, artwork and manifestos.
